A protest erupted in Morón, in the province of Ciego de Ávila, around the municipal headquarters of the Communist Party of Cuba, according to videos posted on social media during the early hours of Saturday.

According to images and testimonies shared online, residents reported hearing gunshots, and a young man was reportedly assisted by demonstrators after being shot in the leg.

“Every time the people have taken to the streets peacefully, they have been repressed, and at some point people were bound to grow tired of putting themselves in harm’s way to receive the blows,” wrote journalist Raúl Gallego, who received some of the videos circulating on social media.

Other recordings appear to show individuals standing on top of the Communist Party headquarters building, throwing computers and furniture into the street. In the videos, some protesters can be heard shouting “Burn it!” as the building begins to catch fire.

Meanwhile, in Havana, activists reported on social media police deployments at several locations across the city, amid the tension following the events in Morón.

Shortly after the videos began to emerge on social media, authorities restricted connectivity as the events unfolded, a tactic the Cuban government has previously used during periods of unrest.

As of now, there has been no official statement regarding the incident or reports of possible detainees.
