José Daniel Ferrer García is the founder and leader of the Unión Patriótica de
Cuba (UNPACU), one of the main opposition organizations on the island, and one of the most recognized voices of Cuban dissent. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison during the Black Spring of 2003, has endured dozens of arrests throughout his political activism, and remained incarcerated following the protests of July 11, 2021, until January 2025.
The OAS's latest statement on Cuba, Nicaragua, and Venezuela is a welcome step. But the democracies of the Americas must move beyond words and take concrete action against the region's remaining dictatorships.
