At least 14 people have been detained in Cuba in the context of protests and pot-banging demonstrations recorded in different locations of the country since March 6, motivated by prolonged blackouts and deteriorating living conditions, Cubalex reported on Thursday.
The mostly nighttime demonstrations have included neighbors taking to the streets to demand the restoration of electricity and express their discontent with the country's widespread crisis.
According to the organization's monitoring, the arrests have been documented based on information disseminated on social media and independent media. Although several protests did not report any arrests, the organization has been able to confirm at least 14 people detained in connection with these events. Additionally, an undetermined number of arrests are reported in the municipality of Guisa, in the Granma province, following a fire at a state facility known as El Mirador restaurant.

Arrests continued on March 10 when two people were arrested in Lawton, Havana, and taken to the State Security headquarters known as Villa Marista.
That same day, journalist Yunia Figueredo was also arrested for participating in a pot-banging demonstration in Jaimanitas, Havana, although she was released hours later. Additionally, three people were arrested in the Havana municipality of Marianao.

One day later, on March 12, in Bayamo, Granma, the mother and sister of political prisoner Alexander Verdecia Rodríguez were detained after going out to the street to demand his release.
So far, the identities of eight of the at least 14 detained individuals have been confirmed, while at least two have been released. There is no confirmed information available about the current situation of the rest of those arrested.
For Cubalex, "these detentions occur in a context of protests motivated by prolonged blackouts and deteriorating living conditions, while the Cuban state continues to respond with repression and criminalization of the protest."
